Launched from space shuttle Discovery in 1990 and orbiting more than 300 miles above Earth, the Hubble Space Telescope has captured awe-inspiring images of nearby galaxies as well as deep space. Every day Hubble generates 3 to 4 gigabytes of data. On the ground, specialists clean and color the black-and-white photographs to help distinguish details.
