We have re-opened! Our new opening hours are 11am to 5pm Tuesday to Saturday (closed Sunday & Monday).
The shop has been cleaned and we have cleared and reorganised to make as much space as possible for customers and workers to move around at a safe distance from each other. We have screens at the till and at other work areas inside the shop.
We provide hand sanitiser at the shop entrance and elsewhere inside the shop - please use it before handling any books or other items. Please wear a mask or face-covering inside the shop, unless you are exempt. Please pay by card instead of cash whenever possible. We will make sure that the shop does not become too crowded, and will limit the number of people inside the shop when it is necessary to do so. Please keep a safe distance from other customers and from workers, and act considerately.
For the time being we will not be selling secondhand books and cannot accept donations of secondhand books, sorry. This is because we are now using what used to be the secondhand books area as extra work and storage space, to make it easier for us to work safely, because our back-office area is too small.
We also will not be displaying posters or leaflets at present, sorry. This is so that we can keep the shop entrance area as clear and tidy as possible, so that it is easier for people to move safely and quickly past each other as they enter or exit.
You can order books either to collect from the shop or for mail-order, for which we charge postage at actual cost, at current UK postal rates.
Supply times are getting back to normal. We can get many books within a few days from our wholesaler, or usually within 7-10 days direct from publishers or their distributors (unless we happen to have the book you want in stock already). Please note that there are still delays in the postal system in some areas.
In June we received an unprecedented number of customer orders, due to high demand for anti-racist books. It took us a long time to process and fulfill all these orders, and many books became temporarily unavailable as publishers sold out of stock. We are now up to date with processing new orders, and we are checking up on older outstanding orders and updating customers as fast as we can manage. If you have been waiting for an order and have not heard from us, please do get in touch (if you ordered online, please quote your order number). Thanks to everyone for their patience.
You can search for & order millions of books via our customer order website (www.newsfromnowhere.co.uk), or browse the book-lists on this website (www.newsfromnowhere.org.uk) and use the email order links next to each book. If you need a book urgently or by a specific date, please email us to place your order, so that we can first check availability for you and tell you if there will be any delay. If you do decide to proceed with the order we can organise online card payment via Worldpay.
If you can't find the book you are looking for on our order website, please do get in touch, as we can search further for you and let you know whether a book is available or not - our order website database is big, but there's many books that we can get that are not on it.
We can currently offer bike delivery by Agile Delivery - a not-for-profit cargo-bike service, whose proceeds fund local cycling projects run by Peloton Co-op - for mail-orders to customers in the following postcodes: L1, L2, L3, L6, L7, L8, L13, L15, L17 and L18. We will offer you this as an alternative to normal post if your delivery address is in one of these postcodes. There is no extra to pay if you have already paid postage as charged by our website for an online order, and for orders placed by email or phone the cost will be equivalent to second-class postage.
For online orders, the website checkout form does not have an option for bike delivery. Instead, we will offer it when we reply to your order. To request bike delivery upfront when you order online - if your address is in one of those postcodes - select postal delivery, and use the notes section of the checkout form to tell us you definitely would like bike delivery.
When your order is ready to be despatched we will contact you to let you know when it could next be delivered, and ask if that is ok for you. Delivery runs are usually on Mondays and Fridays, and deliveries take place through late morning and early afternoon (we cannot give an exact delivery time, because order of delivery will depend on what route works best for the rider for that day's deliveries). It is useful for us to be able to give your phone number to the rider, in case they need to contact you about your delivery, but not essential if you do not want that.
