COVID-19 update (May update)

We have closed to customers (since 24th March) but you can still order books from us by mail-order, subject to availability.

Staffing

The shop is minimally staffed Monday to Saturday, from 10am till at least 5pm, to deal with mail orders, answer calls and emails, receive post and deliveries, and keep up to date with necessary admin work.

Those of us who are continuing to come in to do this don't need to use public transport and are taking all precautions, including regular handwashing, cleaning, and maintaining physical distancing, both with each other and with the very few people that we may come into contact with such as postal and other delivery workers.

Ordering books from us

We can still supply books and other stock by mail-order, for which we charge postage at actual cost, at current UK postal rates.

Currently, most books that are available to order will take at least 1-2 weeks to come into stock (unless we happen to have the book you want in stock already). Our suppliers - publishers and their distributors - are operating with reduced staffing and other constraints. Please note that there are delays in the postal system too at present. Thank you for bearing with us!

You can search for & order millions of books via our customer order website (www.newsfromnowhere.co.uk), or browse the book-lists on this website (www.newsfromnowhere.org.uk) and use the email order links next to each book. If you need a book urgently or by a specific date, please email us to place your order, so that we can check availability first and tell you if there will be any delay If you decide to proceed with the order we can then organise online card payment via Worldpay.

If you can't find the book you are looking for on our order website, please do get in touch, as we can search further for you and let you know whether a book is available or not - our order website database is big, but there's many books that we can get that are not on it.

Bike delivery to some local areas

During the lockdown we are pleased to be able to offer bike delivery for mail-orders to customers in L1, L2, L3, L6, L7, L8, L13, L15, L17 and L18, thanks to Agile Delivery - a not-for-profit cargo-bike delivery service, whose proceeds fund local cycling projects run by Peloton Co-op. We will offer you this as an alternative to normal post if your delivery address is in one of these postcodes. There is no extra to pay if you have already paid postage as charged by our website for an online order, and for orders placed by email or phone the cost will be equivalent to second-class postage.

For online orders, the website checkout form does not have an option for bike delivery. Instead, we will offer it when we reply to your order. To request bike delivery upfront when you order online - if your address is in one of those postcodes - select postal delivery, and use the notes section of the checkout form to tell us you definitely would like bike delivery.

When your order is ready to be despatched we will contact you to let you know when it could next be delivered, and ask if that is ok for you. Delivery runs are usually on Mondays and Fridays, and deliveries take place through late morning and early afternoon (we cannot give an exact delivery time, because order of delivery will depend on what route works best for the rider for that day's deliveries). It is useful for us to be able to give your phone number to the rider, in case they need to contact you about your delivery, but not essential if you do not want that.

Collecting orders

It is still possible to choose to collect your order. When your order is ready we will ask you tell us in advance the day and approximate time you plan to come to the shop to collect - this needs to be between 12pm and 5pm (because we are very busy in the mornings working to get parcels to the post office on time). If another customer collection is already arranged for the same day and time, we will ask you to choose a different time.

Orders must be paid for before you collect, because you cannot enter the shop and we cannot take payment at the door. If you order through our website, please pay when you checkout your order. If you order by phone or email, we can take card payment over the phone, or send you a Worldpay payment link by email.

When you come to collect your order, please maintain safe distancing. We will put your book or books in a box or paper bag and place it on the ground in front of the shop door, and step back so that you can come forward to pick them up. (If it is difficult for you to pick up from ground level, we will hand your order over as safely as we can).

Other ways to support us while we are closed

You can purchase a News From Nowhere gift voucher or set up a credit loan with us to use for future purchases (either as a lump sum or a regular standing order) - contact us to find out more

When will News From Nowhere re-open?

Under current lock-down restrictions, bookshops are not in the category of shops allowed to be open to the public.

Whenever that changes, we will consider carefully when to re-open. We are discussing and planning what we will need to do to keep customers and ourselves safe. It is likely that our opening hours will be shorter than before. We will of course expect everyone within the shop space to maintain safe physical distancing by staying 2 metres apart, and we will limit the number of customers who can be in the shop at any one time

We will only re-open when we are confident that the shop can be safe for customers to visit and staff to work in together.

Thank you for your continued support, we really appreciate it and look forward to seeing you when the crisis has passed. Stay safe!
