All of the irregular armed forces in Colombia's decades-old conflict - left-wing guerillas and right-wing paramilitaries - recruit children to fight. In violation of international standards, these groups recruit young teenagers, sometimes even children as young as eight. While most are not forced to enlist, they typically join to escape poverty, deprivation and, in some cases, parental mistreatment. By the time they are thirteen, most child recruits have been trained to kill and to take part in the atrocities that have become a hallmark of the Colombian conflict. This report provides the first comprehensive account of child combatants in Colombia. It covers their recruitment, training, life in the ranks, role in combat, participation in executions, and treatment after desertion or capture. Based on original research, Human Rights Watch estimates that more than 11,000 children fight in Colombia's war.
