Liverpool (Vauxhall) 1864. Liverpool Sheet 19 (Facsimile of old Ordnance Survey Map)

by Introduction by Kay Parrott - £3.50  Alan Godfrey Maps (2007)
other format    ISBN 13: 9781847840707 | ISBN 10: 1847840701

This very detailed map covers the area of Liverpool around Vauxhall Road and Scotland Road. These roads run north-south through the map, as does Marybone to Bevington Hill.

Features include part of the Leeds & Liverpool Canal, with New Basin and Timber Quay Basin; Glass Bottle Manufactory; Scotland Place; Bevington Bush Baths; St Martin's Market. For the most part this is a map of cramped houses, most of them back-to-back, with small, often noxious industries. Few public buildings are shown and author Kay Parrott says that the area has "fortunately changed out of all recognition". Many tiny courts are also shown, many of them named.

A fascinating map for anyone interested in the living conditions of Liverpool's inner city in the mid 19th century. Street directories for Leeds Street, Marybone, Naylor Street, Richmond Row and Scotland Road are included on the reverse.

The map links up with Liverpool Sheets 18 Gt Howard St to the west, 20 Liverpool Shaw St to the east, and 24 Dale Street to the south.
